German-born Bernhard Willhelm has cemented his position as one of fashion’s most ostentatiously cheeky designers. Receiving a diploma in fashion design with honours at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (an institution with influential alumni such as Dries van Noten and Martin Margiela) in 1998, Willhelm went on to start his own label after working with the likes of Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.

His designs possess a cluster of contradictions: boxy yet fluid, fun yet functional, genderless but sensually provocative. His rarefied skills in drapery and fabric treatments are intertwined with a skewed humour and madness that is hard to forget. Not only a notable designer, Willhelm is a regularly exhibited artist, and has a well-established working relationship with quirky songstress Bjork. Consequently, it is hard not to get excited at the anticipation of a new collection.

This season, Willhelm is back with more arresting designs. The designer describes the collection as having a spiritual element, enlisting symbology to describe the idea of “wisdom and seeing in the night” and breaking through - this is evident in the emblematic owl print which perches atop of features such as the oversized pocket of the Willhelm Noctural Print Tee. The collection features staple pieces with a spontaneous twist, such as oversized proportions, contrast pockets and spray paint finishes amongst others.
