INTRODUCING THYEN
Posted:
Joseph Yen is an Auckland based craftsman working in clothing design and silver, who works under the moniker, Thyen. Yen is interested in the ideas of memory, pattern and repetition and works with clean androgynous designs that reference both modern and ancient pattern making.
Working with fine, natural and antique textiles, Yen has developed a distinct combination of pattern-making and collage through which he seeks to collect and repurpose the subtle shadows and memories of each fabric. Through sensitive processes of collecting, shaping, patching and stitching Yen aims to work in a way that binds lived history to the future, emphasising an embodied way of being in the world that is too easily lost in language.
Tell us a bit about your design and inspiration. Share some process of designing and producing?
Thyen clothing, like the metal work, is a non-seasonal collection of work that is imagined from the maker as a form of creating garments that is sensitive to its material and function. The starting point of designing and making is always based around textiles. The work consists of fabric off the roll from local wholesalers as well as old vintage Japanese kimono fabrics. Design is focused on function and tradition; with close attention to finishings and details on the garments.
We are seeing a strong shift towards supporting locally made products in New Zealand. Why is this important to you and the DNA of your brand?
Thyen has been locally made since its inception in 2013. I still make most of the work myself as I enjoy the whole making process. I have one sewer who sews for me whom I've worked with since the beginning and a cutter whom I've just started to work with. Being locally made means I can overlook the whole process conveniently, also it means we can keep the industry going and allow for more good work to be made in New Zealand.
