NZ Made with Wynn Hamlyn

It's that time of year again and New Zealand FASHION WEEK is here! At The Shelter we love to celebrate local designers and all they do for the industry in our country. This year we've decided to profile our homegrown talent, and dig deep on the importance of producing locally, their favourite Kiwi holiday destinations and how our country inspires their design. This is NZ Made with The Shelter.

First up we have Wynn Hamlyn:

What made you decide to have the majority (or all) of your designs made in New Zealand?

The chance to have relationships with our makers means not only do we get to know them and know about their lives, we can develop the garments with them in detail.

What has been your biggest challenge in doing this?

Finding makers with, and enough of them to be able to efficiently turn around garments to the required level.

Do you find that the New Zealand landscape inspires or influences your design?

Yes, I think that NZ design has a particular functionality to it. Because New Zealanders dress well but also still have to drag their wheelie bins out on a Friday morning. So they have to be high quality and high functioning wearable garments.

What is your most surreal fashion experience to date?

Having garments published in British Vogue.

What has been your biggest fashion disaster?

Having a huge leaking hole in the roof of our studio, and having to save racks of clothes from incoming tides of water flooding down the stairs.

Where in New Zealand have you yet to travel to but it’s on your bucket list?

The far East Cape.

Your favourite place to spend a Kiwi summer?

Te Puke, My Home :)

What’s your most loved current season piece?

Partner Blazer - Blue
