Rick Owens DRKSHDW // Fogachine 2022

The decadent Lord of Darkness rises again.

The Shelter presents the newest Rick Owens DRKSHDW collection; Fogachine (Fog machine). Long using fog to set the mood on his Avant-goth runways, Rick Owens says that he was drawn to the “mysticism” and “disco hedonism” of it deciding to introduce the concept of the personal, portable fog machine.

Fog was also “big, cheap and dumb, and I love that,” he said then.

His portable machines made an appearance at Paris Fashion Week for his mainline collection— held like a “Brutalist modernist version” of a thurible, incense dispensers swung from chains at churches, as described by the designer. The effect was more than mystic; it was anarchic. Models held the lunchbox-size devices at their sides, shooting out fog like exterminators spraying for ants. The photographers at the end of the runway groaned loudly in protest whenever this happened because the fog obscured their vision — and their lenses — for at least several seconds.

Intentional or not, it read as an act of defiance by the models, of controlling their exposure — deciding when they would be visible and when they would be mysterious walking clouds. The purchasable fog machines are rechargeable — ideal for anyone looking to heighten the drama of a scenario on the go — with an integrated tank for the fog-creating fluid, which is nontoxic in line with his sustainable pledge.

To celebrate the arrival of Fogachine, we wanted to go all out for our window design this week. Playing with the idea of fog, we designed a translucent artwork to cover the glass and pulled colours from the collection to disperse across the panes. Inside you can find mannequins draped in the DRKSHDW shades of the season; dust, natural, black, and bright orange.
