Weekend Essentials | Issey Miyake 132 5.

Here at The Shelter we've been fans of Issey Miyake since we began, and it's always been so special to house the Issey Miyake 132 5. range in store and online. While hanging in store or worn, it might not be so clear that there's a secret behind the range... Hint: there is, and it's impressive.

Starting with the name, the numbers aren't just for fun. They refer to the way a piece of cloth (1D) takes on three-dimensional shape (3D), is then folded into a flat surface (2D), and the way that wearing it transforms into a presence transcending time and dimensions (5D).

The 132 5. project was undertaken by Miyake's Reality Lab, their research and development team formed in 2007 to explore the future of making things from clothing to industrial products. They want to create products to fill peoples needs while finding ways to stimulate creative production in Japan.

The combination of different geometric patterns and shapes when folded, then become shirts, skirts, pants and dresses when opened - all depending on the fold and cut-lines in different positions.

As if we couldn't love this whole concept and the pieces any more, one of the many goals of the Reality Lab is to develop materials that don't depend on fossil fuels. They have generated a chemical recycling process where is a polyester fibre is created and used to make the 132 5. range.

In the latest drop of Issey Miyake 132 5. we have a versatile selection of these signature folding pieces. With the long weekend just around the corner, these make the perfect travelling companion - no iron required!
